Why is a company's VISION such a powerful force?

  • Business results are the sum total of all the decisions made at all levels of the organization at every hour of every day.  Granted, some participants exert greater force than others, but all who participate have an influence.  And if all who participate are not like minded there is conflict, indecision, errors, re-tracing, stalls, erratic moves, etc. all of which interrupt the "success flow" and compromise time, money, opportunity and ultimately, levels of success - sound familiar?

 

To be effective, YOUR VISION should:

  • Clearly describe the visionary "outcome" of your Mission at a point in time well beyond an intuitive "extrapolation" of your current situation

  • Include and inspire all of those who do or will participate in the journey to the VISION (investors, employees, suppliers, communities, etc., and even clients!)

  • Create a simple point of focus from which a strategic framework for thinking can be developed, and dynamically evolved

  • Serve as a metric against which progress can be measured

  • Be openly, widely and universally communicated, repeated, and accepted

 

What should be the source of YOUR VISION?

To the extent humanly and logistically possible, YOUR VISION should reflect the aggregate feeling of as broad a population of the organization as is willing to offer thought, rationalized with prudency vis a vis YOUR Mission, cultural framework, infrastructure, resources, and stakeholder expectations.  The latter step is clearly the hard part, but the one that separates a VISION that is powerful, from one that is ineffectual (or worse yet fuels further lack of focus!).  Why?  Because as soon as any member of the organization begins to sense a disconnect between YOUR VISION and all of the aforementioned areas, they will write it off as an uninformed "high glitz" statement of folly, rather than an organizational guiding light.

 

What is the downside of not having a VISION,  or having an ineffectual VISION?

Without a guiding light, the organization will all too quickly become cynical, angry, disgusted, and pessimistic about their future.  Commitment to "do what it takes" withdraws as does loyalty to the overall success.  Personal focus becomes the order of the day and willingness to participate no less foster innovation, invention and improvement wane to non-existent.  A case can be made for the common place "morale problems" of today being primarily sourced in ramifications and down line impacts of failure to have a clearly articulated VISION!

 

In the fast paced environment in which all businesses of today operate, does having a VISION still matter?
